Day 4: Return of Akihabara

The only thing worse this morning than the weather was how Chrissy was feeling. We woke up to some pretty heavy rain and it would only continue throughout the rest of the day. Worse was that Chrissy felt horrible. We decided to still try to get out and wanted to go back to Akihabara to try to get a camera and check out some of the stores that had been a bit too packed with people last time.

We decided to check out the bakery across the street "Tom Tom" and see if we could get some breakfast. These bakeries are really cool and you can find them all over town but we'd heard this one was especially nice. You go inside, grab a tray and some tongs and put everything you want onto the tray. We grabbed two onion rolls with ham and chicken on them, a donut and a piece of toast with some sort of almond glaze on it. They were all great but the toast was fantastic.

After breakfast we hit the rainy streets and rode the subway to Akihabara in search of some new toys. The rain made the already tough navigation of Tokyo streets even worse. We'd bump into other people's umbrellas and have to move to the side on narrower streets to allow other people through. We thought the rain might keep more people inside but we were wrong. We ended up spending a couple of hours in Akihabara. We got a camera and some very nice figures from stores we hadn't even went into before. Chrissy was feeling much worse after all the exertion so we decided to head back to the apartment so she could get some rest.

The foggy haze was very thick. You couldn't tell until you looked up and noticed that most of the buildings were obscured by it.

Chrissy really wasn't feeling well so she decided to stay in. I got her some food from the convenience store across the street which actually turned out to be really great. We watched Dexter and The Walking Dead together then I headed out to get some dinner for myself while she slept.

We had been on such a weird schedule this whole time that we hadn't actually been around the area while everything was open. Asakusa is a great place and there are tons of restaurants that we are wanting to try out in the next few days. I ended up going to a Cafe at the bottom of the Asahi building since I felt like getting some hot food (as much as I love sushi I need something cooked every once in a while).

I walked in and sat down and was quickly approached by someone who spoke a lot of japanese to me and ushered me up to the counter where I saw the sign that read "Order here". I tried to quickly move past my foreigner mistake and ordered something off the "Recommended Items" section called "Cheese Firing of the German Potato"...I had no idea what this would be. I also ordered one of the "Super Dry" Asahi beers that I'd seen advertised all over the place. They had a sign that displayed the current temperature of the beer since it was also advertised as "Extra Cold" and the bartender dipped my glass into some ice water a couple of times before and after pouring the beer. Anyone that knows me knows that I'm not the biggest beer person but this was actually very good. I wanted to order another one but felt awkward enough sitting alone drinking one beer. The food turned out to be some potato wedges with some type of pork on top that looked like bacon but tasted unique. It had a thick layer of cheese on top and came with some Tabasco sauce. All in all a very good meal.

After the great meal I decided to walk around a bit in Asakusa. I saw a small karaoke bar but there weren't too many people inside. There were various restaurants and shops that looked interesting. Mostly it was just nice to walk around and see everything while it was actually open. I got a little lost at one point since I turned the wrong way coming out of a store, but just retraced my steps and got back home just fine.

The day's treasure

  2. Asahi Super Dry!! Tell Chrissy I hope she feels better. Those airplanes/airports are full of Germs. Add the stress of the trip, change in timezone, weather and food and youre bound to catch a bug. have fun and dont forget to hit up Shinjuku and Rhoppongi at night for drinks! The Oak Door at century hyatt and minstrel blieu (train bar) in Rhoppongi are fun.
